196 Allen Street
New York New York 10002
US 212.477.4155 [map]
Price: no cover

My dear friend Ben Wagner has more energy and umph than most others I've ever met.  Not only does he hold down a full-time high-pressure job, but this year alone he has also managed to release a documentary, "Mr. Rogers & Me," run multiple marathons, HAVE A BABY, and (the reason for this show) release a CD entitled "Forever Young" -- here are Ben's words about this CD/CD release:

The record features many of my dearest friends lending their voices, guitars and keys. It is our intention to donate proceeds to The Fred Rogers Center and The Campaign For A Commercial-Free Childhood. Though neither is affiliated with the project in any way, we believe strongly in supporting their efforts towards advancing early learning and children’s media.

The complete “Forever Young” track list:

1 - The Rainbow Connection (featuring Amber Rubarth)
2 - Forever Young (featuring Emily Easterly)
3 - The Only Living Boy In New York (featuring Chris Abad)
4 - Mr. Tambourine Man (featuring Bryan Dunn)
5 - You Are My Sunshine (featuring Jason Walsmith & Becca Smith)
6 - Sweet Baby James (featuring Jeff Jacobson)
7 - You’ve Got A Friend (featuring Mai Bloomfield)
8 - Golden Slumbers (featuring Casey Shea)
9 - Amazing Grace (featuring Jamie Leonhart)
10 - Moon River

Performing at Rockwood is a treat.  The biggest small venue in NY, to me.  The sound is impeccable, the staff phenomenal, the audience attentive and appreciative.

So I'm so glad to be there, solo, again.

Please join me. I plan to keep it pretty smoldering and intimate. There will be some familiar tunes, and some less so. But you'll only know if you come.

So do.

New York NY (212) 777-1157 [map]
Price: $15 (includes a CD)

I will be part of a powerful 6-person choir for Kay's CD release show.
"Kay Ashley's gorgeous, moving "Heliotrope" occupies a charmed point triangulated by Joni Mitchell's "Hejira," Paul Simon's "Graceland," and Nick Drake's "Pink Moon." A master of stacked vocal harmonies and alternate guitar tunings, Ashley's melodies are instantly memorable yet devoid of cliché. At once a love letter to Africa, India, and men in her past, "Heliotrope" is a travelogue of the soul—betraying the influence of far-flung cultures while remaining both recognizably American and distinctly universal."

A Holiday Benefit vol II CD release

Rebel Spirit Music Presents A Holiday Benefit Vol. II @ The Canal Room - 7:30 PM

285 w. Broadway @ Canal Street
NYC NY [map]
Price: $10

"A Holiday Benefit" is a CD featuring classic and original holiday music performed and recorded by some of NYC's best emerging musical talent including: Casey Shea, Kelley McRae, Brent Shuttleworth, Deena Goodman, Dov Rosenblatt, Rosi Golan, Ian Axel, Benjamin Wagner, Derek James, Kyle Paas, Bryan Dunn, Chris Abad, Nate Campany and ME!

Proceeds from this event and sales of the CD will benefit 826NYC, a Brooklyn based nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 6-18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write.

(Check out http://www.826nyc.org for more info)

This event will feature live performances by the above-named, djs, raffles, silent auctions, and other holiday fun. It’ll also be your first chance to buy the record!

What a fun show. It was great to hear so many wonderful artists in one night, in one space, for a good cause.

A lovely blog "You Sing, I Write" had some lovely things to say about the show...
"Jamie Leonhart took the stage next as Benjamin Wagner, host and creator of the annual concert series, introduced her as “one of the finest voices I know and one of the finest people I know.” Leonhart’s vocals are heavenly as she blends jazz, pop and soul together, making for a truly impressive set. Playing three songs off her debut album, The Truth About Suffering, Leonhard wowed the crowd. Comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin can be heard throughout Leonahart’s classically elegant tunes. (You can listen to some of her MP3’s here to see what I’m talking about.)"

very sweet - thank you Annie!

On Monday, October 27, 7 p.m., Don and Jeff Breithaupt, the composer and lyricist (respectively) that comprise the Breithaupt Brothers, bring their ever-evolving songbook back to New York's Joe's Pub at the Public Theater for another all-star revue, featuring a bumper crop of new songs and favorites, as well as a sampling of songs from Seeing Stars, their "boxing musical," an old-school romantic comedy set in Depression-era New York. The announced line-up so far includes Down Beat darling Kate McGarry, Greg Naughton, Catherine Russell, Carolyn Leonhart, The Color Purple's Montego Glover, Jamie Leonhart, the East Village Opera Company's Tyley Ross, Alyson Palmer of BETTY, Shelley McPherson, Rikki Rumball, and teen sensation Stephanie Welton. Don and Jeff's return to their Joe's Pub home follows hot on the heels of a sold-out performance (featuring Brent Carver, Patricia O'Callaghan, Sarah Slean, Dione Taylor, Adam Brazier, John Alcorn, and many others) at Toronto's inaugural Canwest Cabaret Festival. "In the world of fraternal songwriting teams, America may have had the Gershwins - George and Ira - but Canada's got the Breithaupts." (Richard Ouzounian, The Toronto Star)
